Medium 3D

The NBC show Medium had its special 3D show last night. It was as I expected. There were short dream sequences in 3D. Also as expected, way too much ghosting on standard television. I think the effect may have been much better on HDTV systems.

As most 3D enthusiasts know, anaglyphic stereo does not work well on NTSC or PAL TV systems because, to keep color transmissions compatible with B&W, the color is layered on top of a B&W signal. The result is that there is no pure color and that creates excessive ghosting.

Anyone watch the episode in HD, maybe on a DLP projection HDTV set?

I missed it, but you're right, 3D is exploding right now. Makes me wish I was a film or photography student looking for a path in life, rather than a senior executive with little time to devote to my favorite hobby.

Missed the show, but you're right in every respect. I'd also be interested in hearing from an HDTV owner re this. Wouldn't mind picking up a copy of the broadcast if anyone saved it.

All I've found that's pleasant to watch re 3DTV is field sequential i-glasses. I just ordered two new cable sets for my old 180.000 pixel ones today, but the newer model at 1.44 megapixels is my favorite. None of them flicker even at slow NTSC refresh rates because of the memory buffering. BTW 1.44 megapixels is something of a scam, because you need to divide by three-- monitors take an r, g, and b pixel to equal one "real" pixel. Cameras aren't measured like that, so it's an easy statement to misunderstand in the ad hype.

Also, I've played with the newer digital Icuiti hmd for field sequential, and while they don't have the buffering that removes all flicker for TV use, they aren't bad, imho. They will field sequential flip with NTSC, will work at higher flip rates on a computer, and in 2D mode it's a good device for insomniacs with a wife sleeping nearby.

LCD shutter glasses, unless running at a high refresh rate on a computer, are uniformly awful. Worthless for television use except for masochists.

I downloaded an HD video file of the episode. Not too bad when shown through a DLP projector.

I've had acceptable results with field sequential glasses when the source is fed from a computer at 85hz into a DLP projector. My Microtek M4 works fine at 85hz. I don't notice flicker at all. I bought 12 pair of wireless glasses on eBay so I can show videos to friends. Now if we could just get some good movies released in FS stereo.

We've been wrestling with the best method of digital image projection for the Seattle PSSCC (Puget Sound Stereo Camera Club). Do you think that fast refresh and LCD specs (I assume an IR trigger to keep them wireless) is the way to go? I really like the idea of images coming from a single source, but was concerned about the expense of a bunch of shutter specs that would work at a high hz. I've seen expensive displays that will do a high speed cycle of polarization so you can wear standard cheap passive specs (this was placed over a monitor, not set up for projection), but the price was over $10k at the time. Any advice appreciated...
