A friend recently asked me about this, so I'm posting the info here since it's on topic: Feel free to contact me or follow up the post if you have any further ideas. NOTE: the request was for the "best" digital setup that could be built, so I did this via a blend of things that have been field tested and are currently commercially available...

For people who want an alternative, check out the 3D Advantage made by Larry Heyda and using a single 10 mp Casio camera. You couldn't take this rig to the Playa, because it has exposed front surface mirrors, unless you made a special housing. It's "advantage" is that you always have perfect synch, since it uses a prism and mirrors to split the image, and it also get you the image in the normal landscape mode. (www.freewebs.com/larryeda/index.htm)

Two Sony V3 cameras
One 18" Jasper Engineering camera bar with movable mounts (will allow you to adjust your stereo
base) available from Berezin 3D (www.berezin.com/3d/)
Two sony lens adapters for the Sony wide angle supplemental lens
Two Sony supplemental wide angle lenses (they do a .7 diopter correction)
1 LANC Shepherd Pro, also available from Berezin (this synchronizes the cameras)
1 Sony outboard flash-- (there are two, either will work, depending upon your preference)
(go to the DPReviews.com page to look at specs)
I assume you have a tripod, but get a good metal pistol grip that will fit the 1/4-20 tripod threading)
Extra batteries
Buy two 1 or 2 gig memory sticks, any brand, and the same number of 1 or 2 gig Compact Flash memory cards. The camera can use both, and I recommend installing both. If you want to shoot video in 3D the
only way to do it is via the memory sticks, but having the CF card onboard is a real help for backup storage.
Buy an outboard battery charger or two. Only buy Sony brand batteries, because some of the aftermarket
batteries don't work well.
When you get this all assembled go to Muttyan's home page and download all the free stereo image building software, especially Stereo Photo Maker. It's absolutely the best there is, and it's FREE! The url is stereo.jpn.org/eng/

The only drawback is that this will give you a landscape mode rig because the smallest stereo base will be wider that standard, but you did say you wanted landscape mode. now, if you want to close the stereo base even further and remain in landscape, You'll need to make or buy a special mount that allows you to install one of the cameras upside down. This makes it possible to close the IPD/interocular equivalent down to nearly a standard setup. (However, all a larger IPD means is that to avoid violating the stereoscopic window geometry, you just need to get back a bit further from your subject. Check with steve and see if he has an over/under bar-- they have been manufactured by entrepreneurs from time to time for the V3. Don''t get an older over/under bar made for the V! unless you want to spend some time rebuilding it to hold the V3-- the cameras have different lens center to base heights.) If you want to shoot portraits. in addition, buy a Jasper Engineering vertical stereo camera bar/mount, which holds the cameras in vertical (portrait) mode.
